EKKA Exposed
AAQ has investigated several cases of animal cruelty at the Brisbane EKKA.
Campaign details below...
A Tradition of Exploitation: the Brisbane EKKA

Every year in August Brisbane holds the "Ekka", or the Royal Brisbane Show. This family tradition is an exhibition to showcase the so-called rural arts and 'bring the country to the city'.
The show exhibits a myriad of romanticised animal displays that not only give children (and adults) a disturbingly falsified representation of where ‘meat’ comes from, but in themselves breach fundamental animal welfare regulations set out by the RSPCA’s Five Freedoms and the DPI’s Animal Care and Protection Act.
Animal Activism Queensland investigates the EKKA yearly and has documented evidence of animal cruelty at exhibitions including the RACQ Farmyard Friends exhibit, the 'flying pig' & ‘Expo Pig’ exhibits, the ‘Gatton University Exhibit’, plus other inappropriate displays that profit from the exploitation of sheep, cattle, goats, ducks, lamas and even goldfish.
The increasing methods of industrialised animal agriculture showcased — and the gross and wasteful consumerism and disposability that accompanies them — are falling under criticism from people with green and compassionate sensibilities. Just how relevant to a progressive ecological aware society is the exhibition? What is it teaching the next generation at which it is marketed?
The Ekka remains one of the great events of childhood - for one whole day your parents spend bucket loads of money on junk food, show bags and rides, you get to pet baby animals and have a bit of carefree fun. As such, a visit to the Ekka remains an indelible memory in the childhood’s of many Brisbanites. But good memories are also influential ones, so year after year successive generations of parents take their kids along, seemingly without ever questioning just what their kids learn from the experience.
