Cattle Exhibitions

EKKA Exposed - A Tradition of Exploitation: the Brisbane EKKA EKKA Exposed

Lines of tethered cattle made up a large amount of the hundreds of breaches of animal cruelty at this years Ekka.  They were not provided with water, lie in their own urine and excrement unable to move much at all.  They are possibly in this situation for the duration of the week’s fun and frivolities.  This miserable sight is made more unpleasant when you step out side of the exhibit and view the array of tasty snacks you can purchase made of dead cattle.

One of hundreds of cattle tethered for the viewing pleasure of Ekka patrons, without reach of water. Most animals at the show are kept in conditions that fall well short of guidelines.

What they don’t show you:

Most cattle raised for human consumption in Australia are not kept in the romantic, idyllic setting of the old fashioned meadows, grazing and nurturing their calves.  Instead, their short lives are manipulated to suit the farmer and consumer financially.  Calves are removed from dairy cattle at around three days old, causing extreme stress to mother and baby, castration and branding are performed without using anesthetic, they are transported for hours or even days without food, water or shade to then be slaughtered.  Research shows that men who work in meat works are statistically more likely to take this violence home resulting in increased levels of family violence.
