EKKA Exposed - A Tradition of Exploitation: the Brisbane EKKA EKKA Exposed

Following last years report of animal cruelty by AAQ there were some improvements to the exhibit. Even though children were still encouraged to handle young farm animals, smaller animals did seem to be separated from the main area unlike last year.  Despite this, a heavily pregnant ruminant was victim to the hoards of people and smaller animals were still unable to reach the dirty supply of water.

Evidence was recorded of:
  • children chasing, carrying and fighting over animals.
  • No access to water or inadequate access to or supply of water.
  • hens escaping and hiding from children.
  • High risk of trampling.
  • Risk of people being bitten and transmission of diseases.

    What they don’t show you

The cute baby animals cuddled and fed by the city children under the watchful eye of parents will grow up to endure extreme cruelty through transportation, mulesing, castration and slaughter amongst other violent action to then be fed to the unsuspecting children by these doting parents.  Lambs, kids, ducks, hens and geese exhibited at FYF are all subject to conditions that would not be tolerated if these animals were considered as companion animals living in suburbia.

    Teach kids kindness to animals
Too often children grow up without having learnt that animals have feelings and suffer just like us.   Teaching your kids to be kind to animals at a young age  will help them develop compassion towards human beings too in later life.  Encourage your child's school to teach about both sides of the animals story - animals are more than just food - and challenge the perception that the rest of life on earth is there for our use.
