Exporting Cruelty
Tens of thousands of animals die in appalling conditions during transit to the Middle East for Australia's cruel and unnecessary live export trade every year.
Campaign details below...
Ban the Appalling Live Export Trade!

While death and suffering has been endemic throughout the history of the live export industry, Australia's relentless drive to expand its market for 'live exports' has resulted in a corresponding increase in casualties associated with the long-haul overseas trade in live cattle over the past 7 years. With the resumption of the live sheep trade with Saudi Arabia in 2000, there are now even larger numbers being exported to the Middle East.
After the stress of transportation, all the surviving cattle and sheep face death on foreign soil, many into countries which have no animal welfare laws or, at best, inadequate laws. They will usually be killed without pre-stunning and often even without adequate restraint facilities. The result is inherent and persistent suffering.
HistoryIn 1985, during the live sheep export boom years, the Senate Select Committee on Animal Welfare (SSCAW) condemned the live sheep export trade on animal welfare grounds, but anticipated that economic and other factors would demand its continuation. The SSCAW concluded that, 'if a decision were to be made on the future of the trade purely on animal welfare grounds, there is enough evidence to stop the trade'. The SCCAW recommended that the Federal Government "promote and encourage the expansion of the refrigerated sheepmeat trade to the Middle East and other countries, with the aim of eventually substituting it for the live sheep trade".
Trade expansion = More SufferingSome 18 years and several critical reports later, the trade in live animals for slaughter overseas continues on an even greater scale, with no hint that Australia seeks to put this major recommendation into practice. Even 'routine' mortality rates remain unacceptably high as the live trade continues to expand.
As the scale of animal exports increases, the suffering of the individual animal is often forgotten. Despite the need, veterinarians still do not routinely accompany export shipments from Australia. Only when individual tragedies involving large losses (deaths) occur, does attention focus on the plight of the countless animals, primarily sheep and cattle, pitifully sacrificed to earn export dollars for Australia.
