This practice of "mulesing" is defended by wool growers as the most cost effective way to prevent long-term fly strike in sheep. However, alternatives are readily available including better animal husbandry, closer sheering and flytraps. Only 20% of Australian wool growers refuse to partake in this shameful practice -- a testament to the fact that it is an unnecessary and inexcusable cruelty.
The exposed bloody wound, which is 'supposed' to heal leaving behind smooth scar tissue, often infects and attracts flies before healing, rendering this technique useless in many cases. Yet still, this technique is used in preference by wool growers as a low cost control method.
Under mounting pressure, publicity campaigns and wool boycotts spearheaded by animal rights groups world wide, the Australian wool industry has promised to outlaw this barbarric practice by the year 2010. Until then, millions of lambs will suffer this cruel fate. With alternatives already available, this commitment is unacceptable: mulesing and the live export trade must end now!
Letters of protest and protest actions are occurring around the country as horrified consumers learn the truth about the cruelty involved in wool production. AAQ has hosted a number of actions in Brisbane and will not relent until this practice has ended.
