Past Event: Sow Stall Sit In

Gatton: Monday, 29 November 2004

Exact Location: University of Queensland, Gatton Campus
Time: 6AM

In the early hours of Monday November 29th activists from Animal Activism Queensland (AAQ) chained themselves to pens in a Gatton piggery, north of Brisbane.

Police were called by protestors to the farm, located at the University of Queensland's Gatton campus. AAQ has investigated Gatton UQ piggery twice over the last 2 years and both times found major cruelty breaches that were forwarded to the RSPCA and ignored by the regulatory body.

The sit in was made in solidarity with similar actions in South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia in what has become the largest coordinated animal action raid in Australian History.

It comes at a time when many Australians unwittingly buy into intensively farmed cruelty for Christmas hams, and highlights the cruelty involved in raising intensively farmed pigs, in particular, pregnant sows.

As a UQ vet student, I'd like to say none of you have any idea what you're talking about... If you sat in on any pig husbandry lectures you'd know WHY and WHEN sow stalls are used and their benefits. Though you all are fairly amusing, so that's a plus.

PS pigs are delicious

29-11-2004 Christmas Cruelty

29-11-2004 Christmas Cruelty [Click to Enlarge]

Shot on location at Gatton university (UQ): pigs raised for Christmas dinners are raised in confined barren metal and concrete pens so small they cannot walk or even turn around.

Forced to live in their own faeces, with no stimulation these animals often resort to self mutilation.

In protest, AAQ activists chained themselves to pig pens in this action in November 2004.

Teach kids kindness to animals
Too often children grow up without having learnt that animals have feelings and suffer just like us.   Teaching your kids to be kind to animals at a young age  will help them develop compassion towards human beings too in later life.  Encourage your child's school to teach about both sides of the animals story - animals are more than just food - and challenge the perception that the rest of life on earth is there for our use.
